Traveling in Iceland can be an amazing experience, but road and weather conditions are often challenging. Strong winds, rain, snow, or sudden temperature changes can significantly affect driving safety. Therefore, it is advisable to thoroughly prepare your vehicle before any longer journey.
First and foremost, the condition and pressure of the tires should be checked. Good tires are of paramount importance, especially on wet and slippery surfaces. It is also worth ensuring that the brakes are functioning correctly, and that the oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid levels are adequate. In Iceland, the weather can change very quickly, so functional wipers and good lighting are absolutely essential.
However, these numbers aren’t set in stone. Modern engines, improved filtration systems, and high-performance synthetic oils allow longer intervals — but only when driving conditions are ideal.
In many places, the distances between gas stations are considerable, so it is not advisable to risk driving on an empty tank.
Road safety begins with proper vehicle preparation. Regular car inspections help avoid many unpleasant situations and make traveling in Iceland much calmer and more comfortable.
Before setting off, it is also a good idea to refuel your car and plan your route, especially if your journey takes you through less populated areas.
